This is a report of the non-academic impact of international development research conducted at UK universities.

The analysis, commissioned by UKCDS, is based on the case studies of research impact which were submitted to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Overall it analysed 287 impact case studies either directly relevant to international development or the UK Department for International Development.

The case studies were read and classified according to:

• The broad research area – or the “Unit of Assessment” – to which the research was submitted in the REF (e.g. clinical medicine, politics and international studies, anthropology and development studies)
• The countries mentioned as connected to the research
• The sector in which impact took place (e.g. health, education, human rights)
• The different channels used to deliver impact
• The stages along a pathway to achieving impact described in each case
• The beneficiaries of the research impact
• The academic funders connected to the research (including collaborations between UKCDS member organisations)

The study was conducted by the Policy Institute at King’s College London.
