Participants discussed closer bilateral working on career tracking of scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and the potential for self-assessment tools.

UKCDS, in conjunction with the UK Science and Innovation NetworkLiverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the Royal Society and France’s Institut de recherche pour le développement, helped to organise a workshop in March 2015 on evaluation of research capacity strengthening.

The meeting brought together some of the key UK and French funders and practitioners of research capacity strengthening. Among other themes, participants discussed closer bilateral working on career tracking of scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and the potential for self-assessment tools which would allow institutions funded through capacity strengthening initiatives to evaluate their progress.

It is hoped that the report will reach a wider audience beyond the workshop participants, and be of interest to research institutions and funding agencies in Sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere.
