Research Officer

Reporting to the Programme Director, Dr Sabina Alkire, the Research Officer will form a key part of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) team, working on the implementation of multidimensional measures proposed by OPHI. This team supports implementation in external institutions such as governments, international agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).  The post is full time, and tenable for one year in the first instance, to start as soon as possible.  The work requires overseas travel of approximately 60 days a year.

The Research Officer will contribute to OPHI’s research on multidimensional poverty measurement and analysis by writing publishable academic papers on key methodological and/or empirical issues, by collaborating in the calculation and analysis of implemented multidimensional poverty indices, and by participating in OPHI activities such as research workshops, presentations, seminars, and collaborative work.  The post holder will be in charge of providing technical support to those institutions and governments seeking assistance in multidimensional measures by organising online and onsite training. The support includes questionnaire design and measurement design. As part of this branch of work, the Research Officer will need to be politically informed and strategic with an outlook to influencing policy making processes and policy makers.

Applicants must have: a doctorate in economics, social policy or other social sciences with strong quantitative background; demonstrable experience of working on research projects; knowledge of quantitative research methods; the ability to present own research findings in writing; excellent inter-personal skills and discretion; and the ability to engage in strategic non-academic activities.  A high level of computer literacy including excellent programming skills in STATA, together with the ability to support and lead training activities, deliver public presentations (policy briefs, PowerPoint presentations, etc.), and provide technical consultations in English and either French or Spanish is essential.  Candidates will also need the ability to advance an independent set of responsibilities within the overall programme, to take initiative, to problem-solve creatively, and to innovate, as well as the ability to work both independently and within a closely collaborating team.
