COVID-19 Research Project Tracker by UKCDR & GloPID-R

This is a live database of funded research projects across the world related to the current COVID-19 pandemic, as part of the COVID CIRCLE initiative. By providing an overview of research projects mapped against the priorities identified in the WHO Coordinated Global Research Roadmap: 2019 Novel Coronavirus, we support funders and researchers to deliver a more effective and coherent global research response. To our knowledge it is one of the most comprehensive databases, covering a wide breadth of research disciplines.

Last updated: 1 September 2023

To make the best use of the expansive data in the Tracker, we have produced a quarterly Living Mapping Review of COVID-19 funded research projects, which analyses globally funded COVID-19 related research. The LMR’s crucial insights into the breadth of COVID-19 research have helped both funders and researchers to prioritise resources to underfunded areas where there is the greatest research need, and provides opportunities to strengthen strategic collaboration. The latest iteration of the LMR, published on 2 February 2023, is based on data from the Tracker from July 2022.

The LMR features an analysis of research projects in our Tracker against the pillars and priorities outlined in the United Nations Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery. As research now pivots to recovery from COVID-19, the Roadmap outlines 25 key research priorities to support an improved socio-economic recovery and a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable future.

We have also taken a deeper look at four key themes that emerged during our analysis: indirect health impactsresearch capacity strengtheninglong COVIDand new variants.

  • What information can I expect to find in the tracker?

    The tracker includes:

    • All COVID-19 research projects included in the Heatmap and World Map, with additional detail and abstracts where available
    • A full list of all datasets included in the tracker
    • Links to useful online resources

Whilst every attempt is being made to provide a comprehensive overview, we do not pretend to have an exhaustive list of all research projects. Current datasets included are listed below. Please help us complete the database by contributing any additional datasets to covid19@old-ukcdr.s14staging.uk.

You may use the downloadable data freely and link to interactive website elements on your website, provided you give attribution to the project. • How can I add information to this database?

Funders and research organisations can email covid19@old-ukcdr.s14staging.uk to provide datasets to UKCDR, ask questions on the data or provide feedback on the dashboard.

COVID-19 Research Project Tracker: Data Fields

We encourage all funders to collect the information below during the funding application and decision process if possible. UKCDR can extract information from any source document – there is no need to fill out a template (although we can provide one on request).

  • What are the WHO Research Priorities for COVID-19?

  • Interested in exploring the data more?

*NEW Excel pack to explore our COVID CIRCLE data more*

We have a new downloadable Excel pack that allows users to interact with the data in more ways, including:

    • Filtering to specific research funding organisations to explore the data at funder level.
    • Breakdown of projects against other cross-cutting themes and areas of interest.
    • Summary of projects taking place in low- and middle-income countries.
